iCelebrate Teaching and Learning: Sharing the iPad Experience

Abstract

In April 2012, the federal higher education system of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) embarked on the path to national adoption of the Apple iPad as the educational computing platform. The core objective of the adoption was improved learning and degree completion among students in academic programs in support of national development goals. From the National Higher Education development document, the goals are to

- "Achieve individualized student learning consistent with “Post PC Era” trends;

- Introduce of challenge-based learning or other progressive classroom pedagogy;

- Increased student participation and motivation;

- Enhance opportunities for cross-institutional collaboration between faculty members;

- Increase faculty collaboration through cross-institutional repositories of learning objects; and

- Facilitate the migration to e-books."

 

The UAE has three institutions encompassing 20 campuses serving 50,000 students in its federal higher education: UAE University provides a research-intensive experience; Zayed University, a liberal arts, comprehensive environment; and HCT, professional programs. The HCT iPad program was envisioned by HCT’s Chancellor, His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, Minister for Higher Education and Scientific Research, and was led by the Vice Chancellor Dr Tayeb Kamali. This program builds on his history of entrepreneurship and e-learning initiatives, such as integrated wireless campus infrastructures, online learning and knowledge-management programmes, Dr Kamali has successfully built a cutting-edge institution that provides UAE youth with technological skills and the ability to innovate, while driving job creation in the region.

Author Biographies

Cathy Cavanaugh, Higher Colleges of Technology

Dr. Cavanaugh is currently the Associate Director at the HCT ADWC. Previously, she was an Associate Professor of Educational Technology in the School of Teaching and Learning at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Her work focuses on identifying applications of information and communication technology that enhance teaching and learning. Dr. Cavanaugh has worked with virtual schools, school districts, and education agencies in several states and countries. She has a B.A. in education from the University of the Virgin Islands, a M.Ed. from the University of Central Florida, and a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction from the University of South Florida specializing in distance education.

Jace Hargis, Higher Colleges of Technology

Dr. Jace Hargis is currently a College Director at Higher Colleges of Technology in the United Arab Emirates. Previously, he was an Assistant Provost and Director for the Center for Teaching and Learning at the University of the Pacific in California. He has authored a textbook, an anthology and has published over seventy academic articles as well as offered over one hundred national and international academic presentations. His undergraduate and graduate degrees are in the chemical sciences and he has earned a Ph.D. from the University of Florida in Science Education. His research agenda addresses the theoretical aspects of how people learn with the use of emerging instructional technologies.

Stephen Munns, Higher Colleges of Technology

Mr. Munns is currently a Dean at HCT ADWC. Previously, he has worked in several capacities at ADWC, including teacher, Chair of the Foundations Department, Dean of academic programs and support service departments. He has a BA in English Language and Literature and an MA in Open and Distance Learning. He is currently interested in interaction and social construction in the classroom and its representation in related research.

Tayeb Kamali, Higher Colleges of Technology

Dr. Kamali is also Founding Group Chief Executive of the Centre of Excellence for Applied Research and Training (CERT)—HCT’s commercial and training arm. In these roles, he has spearheaded education, training, and applied technology programs in the MENA region. Through his entrepreneurship and e-Learning initiatives, he helped create a cutting-edge learning institution that provides UAE youth with the technological skills and the ability to innovate in a global market, while driving job creation in the region. Dr. Kamali has received numerous awards including: The World Human Resource Development Congress “Human Resource Leadership Award” 2006 & 2009; and France’s highest educational award, the “Palmes Académiques” in 2006. Dr. Kamali obtained Bachelors of Science in both Aircraft Engineering and Aeronautical Engineering followed by an MBA with a concentration in Aviation from the Embry Riddle Aeronautical University. He obtained his Doctorate in Engineering from George Washington University.
